About this tool
Each format has a job. JPEG is universal and good for photos, but it cannot store transparency. PNG keeps every pixel exactly and supports transparency, which suits logos, screenshots and diagrams, but PNG photos are large. WebP does both: small files and transparency. Every current browser supports it, though some older desktop programs do not.
Common conversions: WebP to JPEG or PNG when software will not open a downloaded WebP; PNG to JPEG to make photos smaller for email; JPEG or PNG to WebP to speed up a website.
Good to know
- Input formats depend on your browser. AVIF needs a recent browser, and HEIC is not supported by most browsers.
- Animated GIF and WebP files are converted to a single still frame.
- Converting to PNG creates lossless but often larger files.
