    About this tool

HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is Apple's default photo format since iOS 11. It produces smaller files than JPEG, but Chrome, Firefox, Windows Photos (without an extension) and many upload forms cannot open it. This tool decodes HEIC in your browser using the open-source libheif library, then saves standard JPEG or PNG files.

To stop your iPhone creating HEIC files, go to Settings › Camera › Formats and choose Most Compatible. Photos you AirDrop or email are often converted automatically, but files copied by cable or cloud usually stay HEIC.

    Good to know

    • Up to 50 photos at a time, 40 MB each.
    • Live Photo motion and depth data are not kept; you get the still image.
    • Location and camera metadata are not copied to the converted file.
    • The first conversion downloads a 3 MB decoder, so it takes a few extra seconds.

    Frequently asked questions

How do I open HEIC files on Windows?

Convert them to JPG here, or install the HEIF Image Extensions from the Microsoft Store.

Does converting HEIC to JPG lose quality?

At quality 90 the difference is not visible. Choose PNG for a lossless copy (much larger files).

    Are my photos uploaded?

No. The decoder runs in your browser, so personal photos stay on your device.
