About this tool

Base64 represents any data using 64 safe characters (A–Z, a–z, 0–9, + and /), so it can travel through systems that only handle text. Text is converted to UTF-8 bytes first, so accents, Arabic and emoji round-trip correctly, which naive converters often get wrong. Base64URL replaces + and / with - and _ and drops the = padding, as used in JWTs and web addresses.

Base64 is an encoding, not encryption: anyone can decode it. Never use it to hide passwords.

Good to know

  • Files up to 20 MB.
  • Decoded binary data (such as images) cannot be shown as text; use Image to Base64 for images.

Frequently asked questions

Is Base64 encryption?

No. It is a reversible encoding that anyone can decode. Use proper encryption for secrets.

Why does my decoded text look garbled?

The data may not be text, or it was encoded from a different character set than UTF-8.

What is Base64URL?

A variant that uses - and _ instead of + and / and omits padding, so it is safe in URLs and file names.
