About this tool

URLs can only contain certain characters, so spaces, accented letters and symbols are written as % followed by two hexadecimal digits. A space becomes %20, and "é" becomes %C3%A9.

  • Value / component encodes everything except letters, digits and - _ . ! ~ * ' ( ). Use it for a single query value or path segment.
  • Whole URL keeps characters that give a URL its structure (: / ? # & =), so you can encode a complete link.
  • Form is like component encoding, but spaces become +, as HTML forms send them.

The inspector shows the protocol, domain, path, each query parameter (decoded) and the fragment. It flags common tracking parameters (utm_*, fbclid, gclid, msclkid and others) and gives you a clean link without them.

Good to know

  • Decoding assumes UTF-8, the standard for URLs. Very old links in other encodings may not decode.
  • The inspector does not visit the URL. It only analyses the text.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between %20 and +?

Both can represent a space. %20 works everywhere in a URL. + means a space only in query strings sent by HTML forms. Choose "Form" mode to use +.

When should I use encodeURIComponent instead of encodeURI?

Use component encoding (the default here) for a single value such as a search term or parameter. Use whole-URL encoding only for a complete address, because it leaves characters like / ? & = alone.

Is it safe to remove utm parameters?

Yes for normal browsing and sharing. They only tell the site owner where a visitor came from. Removing other parameters, such as id or page, can break the link, so the tool removes only known tracking ones.
