About this tool

The comparison uses the Myers difference algorithm, the same approach used by Git and most code-review tools, to find the smallest set of line additions and removals that turns the original into the changed text. When a line was edited rather than replaced, the changed words inside it are highlighted.

Long stretches of unchanged lines are collapsed to keep the changes in focus. Tick "Show all unchanged lines" to see everything.

Good to know

  • Designed for up to about 50,000 lines per side. If the two texts differ in more than 2,500 places, the tool asks you to compare smaller sections.
  • Compares plain text only. Copy text out of Word or PDF files first.

Frequently asked questions

Can I compare two Word documents?

Copy the text of each document and paste it into the two boxes. Formatting is not compared, only the words.

Is there a limit on text length?

Each side can have up to 50,000 lines. If the texts differ in more than 2,500 places, compare smaller sections.

What does "Ignore spacing" do?

Lines that differ only in spaces, tabs or indentation are treated as the same. Useful for code that was re-indented.
