About this tool
Typing speed is measured in words per minute (WPM), where a "word" is standardised as five characters including spaces. This test reports net WPM: your gross speed minus one word per minute for each uncorrected error, so accuracy counts. Fixing mistakes with Backspace costs time but not points.
As a rough guide, many people type 35–45 WPM; 60 WPM or more is fast for office work; professional typists often exceed 75 WPM. Accuracy above 95% matters more than raw speed. Regular short practice sessions and touch typing (not looking at the keyboard) are the most reliable ways to improve.
Good to know
Practice texts are in English.
Results on phone keyboards are naturally lower than on a physical keyboard.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good typing speed?
Around 40 WPM is average; 60 WPM or more is considered fast for most jobs.
How is WPM calculated?
Characters typed ÷ 5 ÷ minutes gives gross WPM; uncorrected errors per minute are then subtracted for net WPM.
