About this tool
Words are counted the way most word processors count them: hyphenated words such as "well-known" and contractions such as "don't" count as one. Characters are counted as you see them, so an emoji or an accented letter counts as one character even when it is stored as several code points. Scripts written without spaces, such as Chinese, Japanese and Thai, are split into words with your browser's dictionary-based segmenter.
Reading time assumes 238 words per minute, the average for adult silent reading of non-fiction found in a large 2019 review of reading-speed studies (Brysbaert). Speaking time assumes 150 words per minute, a typical presentation pace.
Good to know
Very long texts (over 1 million characters) may update more slowly.
Sentence detection relies on punctuation, so lists without full stops count as one sentence.
Platform limits change over time. Check the platform if a limit is critical.
